Eduardo Villarta
I joined Rotary over 30 years ago and I served as the Rotary Club of Nepean-Kanata’s first female Club President in 1995-96. I am very happy to take on the Presidential role once again in 2023-24!
To give back, to make a difference to the local community and the rest of the world. These are the reasons I hear from new member prospects when they explain why they are looking at joining Rotary. I felt the same way myself and the feeling of having accomplished that over the years is very satisfying.
The Rotary moto "Service above Self" says it all. Rotary provides the perfect vehicle for achieving meaning beyond yourself. In the aftermath of the pandemic, many areas of recent progress in the developing world like eradicating polio and providing education for young girls are threatened. Problems like mental health for youth, although not new, are more pressing. The elderly are suffering from isolation. The economic disruption of the pandemic has left many vulnerable, food banks are seeing significant increased demand on their services. The societal need for charities and service organizations has never been greater than now.
Our Rotary International (RI) Theme for 2023-24 is “Create Hope in the World”. RI President R. Gordon. R. McInally calls for Rotary to create hope in the world by working for peace and mental wellbeing. He urges members to engage in tough conversations and earn the trust that’s necessary to realize these values.
In a world with so many challenges, Rotary provides the perfect avenue for me to get a feeling of accomplishment while achieving positive change through personal and collective service.
I invite you to join me and our Club Members in our efforts to do good things in our local and worldwide community!
